Aspects of Salvation in the Old Testament

Faith – Believing in God

Definition: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Citation of the Old Testament Passage

Habakkuk 2:4  “Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not upright in him; but the righteous shall live by his faith.” (KJV)

“I, the LORD, refuse to accept anyone who is proud.  Only those who live by faith are acceptable to me.” (CEV)

“Look at that man, bloated by self-importance-full of himself but soul-empty.  But the person in right standing before God through loyal and steady believing is fully alive, really alive. (MSG)

Thoughts and Applications on the Verse – Marcy Snow, Division Director, Beech Grove, IN ( my boss , SMILE )

  1. Faith is a Gift – God’s work in us that changes us and gives new birth from Him.  It changes our hearts, our spirits, our thoughts and all our powers.
  2. Faith is Substance – It is a condition of the human heart that is as real to God as the thing we asked for will be to us when we receive it.  It is the exact image of the thing for which we ask.  When we receive what we have prayed for the image is replaced by the actuality.1
  3. Faith is Evidence – The existence of the God-kind of faith in the human heart is the evidence that what we have prayed for exists.  Faith, based on the Word of God-not what we see or don’t see-not good or bad circumstances.
  4. Faith is Obedience – An absolute requirement for answered prayer.
  5. Faith is Thankfulness – Faith thanks God beforehand for what He is about to do.

New Testament References to Faith

Hebrews 10:38 – And my righteous ones will live by faith.  But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away. (NLT)

Ephesians 2:8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (NIV)

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. (NIV)
1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  And if we know that He hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of Him. (NIV)

Chaplain Testimonies – How our faith is applied to our ministry in the workplace

Chaplain Marcy Snow, Beech Grove, IN

It is with great joy that I see God daily increasing my faith and transforming me; for He has called me to live righteously, listen intently, lead others, share Jesus, and to love as He loves.  As I work with clients, chaplains, and employees, I’ve learned it’s not about me…I can do nothing, only through prayer, believing, trusting Jesus, and following his Holy Spirit to please Him and fulfill His purposes for my life.

Chaplain Aaron McLaurine, Lima, OH ( I work with Aaron – he runs a ministry of  a ” boxing club” in Lima -inspires youth –  amazing )

“The just shall live by faith.”  It’s God’s will for us as His people to stay loyal to His word.  To “live” means to experience the blessing of God in abundance.  When God gives us a word, the enemy tries to bring conflict and destroy the very word that God has given us.  As a Chaplain, not only do I encourage myself from time to time but I encourage people everywhere I go to keep the faith, stay steadfast, and trust God, for His word is the Absolute truth.

Chaplain Janelle Taviano, Lima, OH ( don’t know her)

You ask the Lord to fill you full of the Holy Spirit, divine wisdom, discernment, understanding; then the phone rings and on the other side is a person from the “workplace.”  Their lives are shattered, their heart is broken.  Somehow a Holy God gives you spiritual truths that make a spiritual impact in a human’s life on earth.  In that, how can we boast of ourselves?

Joyce Wheeler, Fort Wayne, IN

I have a lot in common with Habakkuk.  As I watch people struggle to be “good enough”, I am so happy that there is NOTHING I can do to earn my own salvation.  In the OT NOTHING but the blood price God asked for could atone for their sin and for me today, NOTHING but the blood of Jesus can do the same.  It is my joy to share that truth with people in my personal life and my ministry.  Since time began there has been only one answer and it brings total joy and peace.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for Jesus, our salvation.  Increase our faith, O Lord, help us to surrender our lives, heart, mind and body to your will.  Encourage us to feed on your Word daily that we might grow in wisdom and knowledge.  Help us to come to you with a sincere and expectant heart that you may be glorified as we live for you.  Amen.
